Reason 17
The Bible says there is no chance of gaining salvation after earthly death. In other words, death seals man's fate.
Psalm 49:7-8
None of them can by any means redeem his brother, Nor give to God a ransom for him-For the redemption of their souls is costly, And it shall cease forever-
Proverbs 11:7
When a wicked man dies, his expectation will perish, And the hope of the unjust perishes.
Ecclesiastes 9:10
Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.
Luke 16:26-31
And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.' "Then he said, 'I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.' Abraham said to him, 'They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' But he said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.'"
Hebrews 9:27
And as it is appointed for me to die once, but after this the judgment,
Revelation 20:12 and 15
And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life.
And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
LDS doctrine is very contradictory when it comes to this subject. In one book called the book of Mormon, the doctrine agrees with the Bible and teaches that death seals man's fate.
Mosiah 2:36-39
And now, I say unto you, my brethren, that after ye have known and have been taught all these things, if ye should transgress and go contrary to that which has been spoken, that ye do withdraw yourselves from the Spirit of the Lord, that it may have no place in you to guide you in wisdom's paths that ye may be blessed, prospered, and preserved-I say unto you, that the man that doeth this, the same cometh out in open rebellion against God; therefore he listeth to obey the evil spirit, and becometh an enemy to all righteousness; therefore, the Lord has no place in him, for he dwelleth not in unholy temples. Therefore if that man repenteth not, and remaineth and dieth an enemy to God, the demands of divine justice do awaken his immortal soul to a lively sense of his own guilt, which doth cause him to shrink from the presence of the Lord, and doth fill his breast with guilt, and pain, and anguish, which is like an unquenchable fire, whose flame ascendeth up forever and ever. And now I say unto you, that mercy hath no claim on that man; therefore his final doom is to endure a never-ending torment.
Alma 34:32-35
For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors. And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed. Ye cannot say, when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world. For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold, ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal you his; therefore, the Spirit of the Lord hath withdrawn from you, and hath no place in you, and the devil hath all power over you; and this is the final state of the wicked.
However, in another book called the doctrine and covenants, the doctrine teaches that everyone will have a second chance after death. This is one reason for the temple; those who were not Mormon on earth will die and go to spirit prison. The living LDS members do proxy work (baptism, etc.) in the temple for those who have already died. Once the dead have had their temple work completed by a living Mormon, they now have a chance to choose the LDS doctrines and transfer over to paradise with all the other worthy mormons. In other words, we will all be given a second chance to choose mormonism after we die.
D&C 76:106-112
These are they who are cast down to hell and suffer the wrath of Almighty God, until the fulness of times, when Christ shall have subdued all enemies under his feet, and shall have perfected his work; When he shall deliver up the kingdom, and present it unto the Father, spotless, saying: I have overcome and have trodden the wine-press alone, even the wine-press of the fierceness of the wrath of Almighty God. Then shall he be crowned with the crown of his glory, to sit on the throne of his power to reign forever and ever. But behold, and lo, we saw the glory and the inhabitants of the telestial world, that they were as innumerable as the stars in the firmament of heaven, or as the sand upon the seashore; And heard the voice of the Lord saying: These all shall bow the knee, and every tongue shall confess to him who sits upon the throne forever and ever; For they shall be judged according to their works, and every man shall receive according to his own works, his own dominion, in the mansions which are prepared; And they shall be servants of the Most High; but where God and Christ dwell they cannot come, worlds without end.
D&C 88:99
And after this another angel shall sound, which is the second trump; and then cometh the redemption of those who are Christ's at his coming; who have received their part in that prison which is prepared for them, that they might receive the gospel, and be judged according to men in the flesh.
I fear Mormons will be in for a surprise when they die and realize Joseph Smith deceived them, they don't get a second chance, nor will their family members get a second chance, even though they did the temple work for them...
I will go with the Bible on this one and put my entire Faith and Trust into Christ instead of a church or modern day prophet. I am going to live my life as if I have no second chance. I would rather fall away from the 'one true church' and end up in the 'second level of heaven' than remain in the 'one true church' and take a chance that it could be false.
The Bible is very clear that we will all end up in one of only two places; Everlasting Punishment or Eternal Life. We have no other option and no other chance; it's Heaven, or it's Hell.
2 Thessalonians 1:9
These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,
The Bible is also very clear that people do not get out of Hell, and the LDS doctrines are contradictory to this as well.
Revelation 21:8
But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."
Matthew 13:24-43
The Parable of the Wheat and the Tares
Another parable He put forth to them, saying: "The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. So the servants of the owner came and said to him, 'Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?' He said to them, 'An enemy has done this.' The servants said to him, 'Do you want us then to go and gather them up?' But he said, 'No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, "First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn."'"
The Parable of the Mustard Seed
Another parable He put forth to them, saying: "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field, which indeed is the least of all the seeds; but when it is grown it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches."
The Parable of the Leaven
Another parable He spoke to them: "The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened."
Prophecy and the Parables
All these things Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables; and without a parable He did not speak to them, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: "I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things kept secret from the foundation of the world."
The Parable of the Tares Explained
Then Jesus sent the multitude away and went into the house. And His disciples came to Him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the tares of the field." He answered and said to them: "He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one. The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels. Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age. The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
Matthew 13:47-50 The Parable of the Dragnet
"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was cast into the sea and gathered some of every kind, which, when it was full, they drew to shore; and they sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but threw the bad away. So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth."
According to LDS doctrines, Hell as an institution is eternal, but those in Hell serve sentences of various length, similar to those in a prison. Inmates come and go as in jail, but do not spend eternity there. It is temporary. Most of them will eventually leave Hell once their debt has been paid to God and they will then go to the telestial kingdom. (Mormon Doctrine, pp. 349-351)
*And this is also contradictory to what the Bible says about Hell.
Matthew 25:46, one of the clearest Bible Verses there is.
And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
My unanswered question was:
Why would I take a chance at living my life as if I may have a second chance after I have died?
I was initially devastated when I received this answer that I cannot take this chance, yet overjoyed to find the truth that I will receive Eternal Life!
I am so confused. I am an LDS convert of 10yrs after trying 2 go 2 so many different churches 2 C where I fit. I felt most at home in the Catholic church but after praying 2 God 4 a companion, I abandoned being lesbian & married a mormon man. I try so hard 2 B & do what I think God wants from me but I never measure up. I have so many faults. I do try 2 B the best I can B. I do believe Christ died 4 me 2 on that cross but that it would B very selfish of me 2 waste His time with my petty problems. When I try 2 worship Him, I want it private so He knows I mean it. But I don't want 2 bother him either cuz I just wind up saying or doing something stupid like a curse word. Mostly I just want 2 sleep til I die so I won't B a bother 2 anyone else, or Him.
ReplyDeleteGood article!
ReplyDeleteHang in there "The Saint." Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost" (Luke 19:10). He rescues people like you and me who know we are sinners and need a savior not those who are self righteous and don't think they need "a physician" (Luke 5:31).
Contrary to what the LDS Bishop would have you believe during your temple "interview," true Christianity can only find life in the heart of one who realizes and acknowledges "I'm NOT worthy." Even on.my best day I'm not worthy and never will be but Jesus is worthy. I thank God that Jesus is my savior and not me.
The Bible teaches the Good News that because of Jesus we can come to him to Him to receive forgiveness from all of or sins by grace which is a gift from God. It does not teach that we can ever receive God!s forgiveness through our personal "worthiness" or "obedience to the laws and ordinances" (Joseph Smith's "Articles of Faith").
Joseph was wrong and Jesus was right, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9).
